SICPRE's 10 golden rules for safe mastoplasty

SICPRE's 10 golden rules for safe mastoplasty

One of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures is breast augmentation, the operation that gives more volume to the breasts. it is, however, an operation that should not be underestimated, as it is particularly delicate because of the area on which it is performed. Before undergoing this type of operation it is therefore a good idea to be firmly convinced and also aware of the results that will be obtained. The Italian Society of Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery (SICPRE) intervened a few years ago with a decalogue, which is worth remembering and on which it is better to reflect before undergoing breast augmentation surgery.

1) Never before the age of 18
Since July 2012, breast augmentationsurgery has been prohibited by law for persons under the age of 18. This choice is intended to guarantee an adequate level of maturity for women undergoing the operation, to avoid superficial choices that are also at higher risk of regret.

2) Tell (and ask for) the whole truth

it is essential for the patient to tell the surgeon all the most important facts about her health. For his part, the surgeon is obliged to provide all information and data concerning the operation, convalescence and any problems that may arise.

3) Only if you are in excellent health

Breast augmentation, like all plastic surgery operations, is to be considered an 'elective' operation, i.e. without any urgency. It is therefore only performed if the patient's health conditions are perfect, otherwise the operation is postponed. Exactly, there is no hurry.

4) Do not exceed the C cup

When one decides to undergo a breast augmentation operation, the tendency to exaggerate is there. In reality, however, it is inadvisable to exceed a C cup. An exaggerated size definitely makes the surgeon's intervention blatant and does not help at all in the long term; gravity will take its effect especially on an excessively heavy breast. it is a law of nature.

5) Establish now who will pay for any future surgery

One hopes it will never happen, but sometimes it can happen that the results of breast surgery are not as expected. The body can have a negative reaction to the implants, for example 'encapsulation' when the body attacks the implants by covering them with fibrous tissue. In this case, a further operation is necessary. Sometimes the two operated breasts may be asymmetrical, or it may happen that with the passage of time the breasts tend to fall in any case and it is necessary to intervene with a mastopexy. In short, something can go wrong, so it is always a good idea to clarify who will be responsible for further surgery before the operation.

6) Prefer lipofilling to avoid future operations

A breast augmentation is not always forever. One has to bear in mind that it is very likely that another operation will be necessary some time later. If this is a possibility that you want to rule out in advance, it is better to choose lipofilling, a cosmetic surgery procedure that takes fat from other areas of the body and transfers it to the breast. The breast augmentation may be minor, but you will have the certainty of never having to have another operation.

7) Think carefully before, to avoid trouble later

To achieve the desired results, an open discussion with the surgeon is essential. The concept of beauty has always been subjective, so the aesthetic standards of the patient and the surgeon may not coincide. This is why it is important to talk about one's expectations first.

8) Getting information about implants

The prosthesis market is now in the hands of a few large multinationals, which guarantee high standards of quality and safety. In any case, before undergoing surgery, it is advisable to find out about implants and the company that manufactures them.

9) For thin women, implants should be inserted in a different way

The position of the implants is very important. They must be placed differently according to the patient's physique, which is very important especially for thin people to avoid the "balloon" effect.

10) Think carefully about the motivation for the operation

Breast augmentation surgery must be done for the right reason, so absolutely not to please someone or to look like someone else, but simply to feel good about oneself.
